Blog No. 15 – Singapore

In early July, we took a family vacation to Singapore. This island country is about a 5 hour flight from Shanghai. We were impressed with this small Asian country. Here is a brief background of Singapore.

It is the smallest nation in Southeast Asia. It is only about 270 square miles, and it is one of three remaining true city-states in the world. It lies only 85 miles north of the equator and it is humid all year around. Singapore is known as the “Asian Country for Beginners” because it is one the most westernized Asian countries and most people speak English. Singapore has four official languages though - English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil. So most public information is writing in all four languages!

Our five day vacation was filled with fun activities, but it was also relaxing. We stayed on Sentosa Island at the Shangri-La Resort. We swam in the pool everyday. The kids enjoyed the two children’s pools. Quinlan especially liked the three waterslides. Peacocks, tree frogs, birds, and a resident iguana roamed the resort freely.

We explored Singapore’s main island by riding a cable car and Shangri-La’s free shuttle bus. We also rode on the subway multiple times to downtown’s famous shopping street, Orchard Street, and to Little India. Then we took a taxi to East Coast Park to eat delicious chili crab and black pepper crab at Red House. It was messy, but very YUMMY!

Finally, we took the kids to the aquarium, Underground World, and the Night Safari.
