Anh Thy, Quinlan, and Vu flew to Guilin/Yangshuo for a three day sight-seeing tour while Brennan and Mark stayed at home with our Ayi. Guilin/Yangshuo is about a 2 ½ hour flight west of Shanghai. It is a small city with gorgeous landscape and rivers.
The trip started out poorly. Our outbound flight was delayed for 4 hours, and we didn’t arrive to Guilin until 2 am. However, it turned out to be a great trip. We enjoyed breathing the fresh air and exploring the countryside. Our first expedition was a scenic boat ride from Guilin to Yangshuo down the Li River.
Rolling hills, steep cliffs and fantastic caves surrounded the river. We ate and shopped at the famous Xi Jie. We even tried Yangshuo’s famous “Beer Fish”. One night, we attended a local show that was performed on a river! It was incredible! The director is the same person who will be directing the opening and closing ceremonies for the Beijing Olympics. The show contained over 600 local people all dressed in traditional costumes from different ethnic groups in China. The last day in Yangshuo, we rode down a small river on a bamboo raft. The raft was only seven bamboo stalks wide! Quinlan had a lot of fun going down the small waterfalls.
On our way back to Guilin, we went to Shangri La. It is a tourist attraction that recreates the earlier times of daily life of some ethnic villagers around Guilin. We saw how they made paper, combs, and wooden art pieces. Lastly, we explored many caves and parks in Guilin. We visited Reed Flute Cave, Elephant Trunk Hill, Fubo Hill, and Water Moon Cave.
